Today, I decided to make this illustration. It was originally done in black ink on paper, then it was scanned in and coloured on Photoshop. I have been inspired by the colour scheme used in the comic Blue by Pat Grant so I decided to give it a go. I felt that the brown and blue colour scheme suited the pirate theme. Do let me know what you think.
I’ve just completed this comic for the Cape/Observer/Comica Prize. The above panel was hand pencilled and inked using Black Magic Indian ink and a Windsor and Newton Series 7 size four brush. Then I scan it into Adobe Photoshop using my A3 scanner. I go onto the editing stage:
1) I adjusted the contrast so that the black and white are true
2) Then I created a new layer and set the layer to Multiply mode which allows the colour to go behind the black, for each colour in turn I created a new layer to allow for individual colour adjustments and rubbing out errors. The shadows are done on top of the block colours in Multiply mode.
3) For the colouring of the background pattern I went back to the background black and white layer and selected the black colour range. Then I created a new layer in Normal mode for the green colour. Using the brush tool I carefully coloured over the selected black area of the pattern. ctrlD for deselect to see what I’m doing and alt-ctrl-z to carry on colouring.
4) For the foreground pattern I used the same principle as the background but I had to add the solid green colour first in Multiply mode and move the Normal mode white layer to the top.
